"We'll never have another cast like this again in terms of having fun and putting up with each other," says Milsom, who credits "Phantom" stage manager Ray Ginn and company manager Bob McDonald for making it happen. The producers announced their decision in September to close the show after global economic troubles and a drop-off in the overseas tourist business indicated leaner times ahead at the box office.įor Milsom and other cast members, "The Phantom" will mean lasting memories of professional achievement and pleasure. She is one of several performers in the 35-member cast who have been with the Curran Theater production since opening night, December 12, 1993, and who will be there when the curtain closes for the final time on December 13, the day after the show's fifth anniversary. That was more than 1,800 performances and thousands of costume changes ago for Milsom. Milsom took the offer and signed on as an ensemble performer and "cover," or understudy, for a leading role she played numerous times as Madame Giry, the autocratic ballet mistress and messenger for the mysterious masked "ghost" of the Paris Opera. "The salary "The Phantom" offered was great, and just as important, it would be coming in every week," Milsom, a tall, outgoing woman in her early 40s, recalls, smiling.
Milsom, a trained classical performer who had sung leading roles with opera companies on two continents, from New York City to Nice, and with symphonies from San Francisco to Paris, was between jobs at the time.
